In SPECTRUM, INFN contributes as High Energy Physics Domain Expert Community.
The National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN) is the Italian research agency dedicated to the study of the fundamental constituents of matter and the laws that govern them, under the supervision of the Italian Ministry of Universities and Research (MUR); the INFN employs more than 1,000 staff researchers and technologists. The INFN is a major stakeholder in the LHC/HL-LHC projects, with activities including the design, development and operations of all systems, including a ~10% share of the computing infrastructure and resources; in particular, several INFN staff researchers have been in charge of Computing Projects (and its planning for HL-LHC) areas in major LHC experiments.
The INFN has been a frontrunner in the effort of HTC-HPC integration, via a PRACE project won in 2018. The INFN is the receiver of a NRRP (National Recovery and Resilience Plan) project to deploy and operate the “Italian Center for Supercomputing”, a 319 MEur initiative involving all STEM players, and with the overarching goal to prepare a “Italy-wide” data lake for research and industry. The INFN has been leader or participant in a large number of computing-related EU projects in the last 10 years; a non-exhaustive list includes INDIGO-DataCloud, EOSC-hub, eXtreme DataCloud, ESCAPE and EOSC Future.
